JAMB Cut-Off Marks 2026: What Your Score Actually Means and What to Do Next

JAMB confirmed the national minimum cut-off mark for the 2026/2027 admission cycle on 11 May 2026, at its annual policy meeting in Abuja. The board retained 150 as the minimum score for university admission, kept 100 as the minimum for polytechnics, and removed the UTME requirement entirely for candidates applying to Colleges of Education for NCE programmes and to Agriculture courses outside engineering.

If you already have your UTME score, this is the guide that tells you what that number actually means for your admission chances, not just the bare national minimum everyone quotes.

The national minimum is a floor, not a target

The 150 mark is the absolute lowest score JAMB allows any university to admit a candidate with. It is not a score that guarantees you a spot anywhere. Every institution sets its own cut-off above that floor, and the gap between the national minimum and what a specific school actually demands can be enormous.

At the top end, Pan-Atlantic University set its 2026 baseline at 220, the highest of any institution on the approved list. Elite public universities including the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, and Obafemi Awolowo University generally require candidates to clear the 200 mark before they are even eligible for Post-UTME screening. Reaching 200 at one of these schools does not mean you are admitted either. It means you have cleared the first filter and can now sit for their screening exercise, where your final admission depends on a combined score.

Most schools that run Post-UTME screening use a weighted formula, commonly splitting the final decision 50:50 between your UTME score and your Post-UTME performance, though some universities weight O’level results into that mix as well. This is why two candidates can score the same 220 in UTME and end up with very different outcomes at the same school. Screening performance closes the gap or widens it.

Course also changes everything. A 150 might comfortably get you into an available course at a state university, but Medicine and Surgery, Nigeria’s most competitive course nationwide, typically demands scores of 280 to 300 or higher at federal universities such as UNILAG, UI, OAU, and UNIBEN, and even then, admission is based on the top percentile of applicants for that specific department, not a fixed number. Law, Pharmacy, and Engineering follow a similar pattern of sitting well above the general institutional baseline.

What to do based on your actual score

If you scored below 150. You do not qualify for university admission this cycle under the national minimum. Polytechnics and monotechnics require only 100, so that route is open to you, and Colleges of Education no longer require a UTME score at all for NCE programmes, meaning you can apply there directly. This is a legitimate and often faster path into skilled careers, particularly in technical and education fields where Nigeria has ongoing demand.

If you scored between 150 and 199. You clear the absolute floor but sit below what most competitive federal and top private universities require just to be considered for screening. Focus your applications on state universities and private universities with lower baseline cut-offs, and use the JAMB Change of Course or Change of Institution option on the CAPS portal if your first choice is out of reach. This lets you move from a school with a 200 threshold to one sitting at 160 or 180 without losing your admission cycle.

If you scored 200 and above. You meet the entry threshold for most competitive public and private universities and are eligible to register for their Post-UTME screening. Do not treat this score as the finish line. Start preparing for your school’s Post-UTME exercise immediately, since your final admission depends on how well you perform there combined with your UTME result.

If you scored above 250. You are in strong contention for competitive courses at nearly any institution, including many professional programmes, though Medicine, Law, and similar courses will still require excellent screening performance and, at many schools, strong O’level grades in relevant subjects.

How to check your admission status on CAPS

Once schools begin releasing offers, admission status is confirmed through JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System, not through the individual school alone.

  1. Go to caps.jamb.gov.ng
  2. Log in with your JAMB registration number and password
  3. Check the admission status section for any offer from an institution
  4. If offered admission, you must accept or reject it directly on CAPS within the window given. An offer you ignore can be withdrawn and reassigned to another candidate

Schools upload their admission lists to CAPS after concluding Post-UTME screening, and JAMB requires institutions to finalize and upload these lists by a set deadline each cycle, so check CAPS regularly during the admission period rather than waiting for a personal notification.

Getting ready for Post-UTME screening

Since screening carries as much weight as your UTME score at most competitive institutions, treat it with the same seriousness. A few things that consistently help candidates:

  • Confirm your chosen school’s screening date directly from their official admissions portal or verified social media page, not from unofficial forwarded messages
  • Practice with past Post-UTME questions specific to your institution, since format and difficulty vary significantly between schools
  • Bring every required original document to screening, including your UTME result slip, O’level result, and any identification the school specifies, since incomplete documentation disqualifies candidates on the day regardless of score
  • If your school assesses O’level grades as part of screening, make sure you meet the credit requirements in your core subjects before applying, not after

Beyond admission: start thinking about your CV now

It feels early to think about employment while you are still chasing a university admission, but this is actually the best time to start. Nigerian graduates increasingly compete for internships, campus ambassador roles, part-time work, and NYSC placements before they even finish their degree, and every one of those requires a CV. Students who wait until final year to build their first CV are often scrambling with no clear structure and nothing to show beyond their degree in progress.

Frequently asked questions

Is 150 a good JAMB score? It is the national minimum, so it technically qualifies you for university admission, but it is well below what most competitive federal and private universities require for Post-UTME eligibility. Whether 150 is “good enough” depends entirely on which school and course you are targeting.

Can I change my institution if my score is too low for my first choice? Yes. Use the Change of Course or Change of Institution feature on the JAMB CAPS portal to move to a school whose baseline matches your score.

Does Post-UTME score matter more than JAMB score? Neither matters more on its own. Most schools that conduct Post-UTME combine both scores, commonly in a 50:50 split, so a strong performance in one can offset a weaker performance in the other.

Do Colleges of Education still require a UTME score? No. As of the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB removed the UTME requirement for NCE programmes at Colleges of Education, along with Agriculture courses outside engineering.

What happens if I ignore an admission offer on CAPS? An offer you do not respond to within the given window can be withdrawn and reassigned to another candidate, so check CAPS regularly and act on any offer promptly.

Your JAMB score opens or narrows your options, but your Post-UTME performance and how quickly you act on CAPS decide the outcome. Treat both stages with equal seriousness, and start building the habits, and the documents, you will need well before you actually resume for your first semester.
